What to Wear on Photoshoot Day
So, you’ve booked a family photoshoot—yay! Now comes the inevitable panic— “What do we wear?!” If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet feeling personally victimized by your wardrobe, you’re not alone!
Good news: I got you. As a photographer, I’ve seen it all, from the perfectly coordinated to the “my toddler picked this out and we ran with it” look. (No judgement here… I have a 2 year old at home!)
But if you want timeless, beautiful photos that don’t make you cringe in five years, here’s your no stress guide to picking the perfect outfits!
Neutrals + Soft Tones: Your Best Friend.
Listen, I love a bold color. I am a BOLD color girl. Buuuuut, in family photos, neutrals and earth tones always win. Think soft creams, muted blues, sage greens and warm browns. Basically— colors that won’t make you look like 90s gel pens exploded in your family portrait.
Earth tones flatter every skin tone and look great in any setting/backdrop. Plus, they help keep the focus where it belongs— on your beautiful faces, not on neon Uncle Bob in his traffic cone-orange polo shirt. You get me?
2. Coordinate, Don’t Clone.
Gone are the days of wearing white shirts and jeans (RIP 90s JCPenney photos). Instead, aim for coordinating colors that compliment each other. Think of outfits as a well balanced charcuterie board— different but working together in harmony.
Pick 2-3 base colors and mix in variations.
Combine textures and layers to add depth (think denim, knits, flowy dresses)
Avoid matchy-matchy overload - your family should be a vibe (not a uniformed baseball team)
3. Skip the Loud Patterns + Logos
You know what looks amazing in photos? Subtle patterns, textures and solid colors. You know what doesn’t? Large logos, distracting prints, and aggressive neon stripes that make your eyes hurt.
If you must have a pattern, go for something small and delicate— like florals or a soft plaid. But if your shirt looks like it belongs on an optical illusion poster— its got to go.
Dress for the Location + Season
Shooting in a field of tulips with me in May?? (See details below!) Flowy dresses and natural colors will look dreamy. Got an urban city backdrop? Chic neutrals and structured outfits really pop! Beach session? Barefoot and breezy, baby!
And did I mention layers? Layers add dimension to your photos and help you adjust if the weather decides to be unpredictable which in CT.. unpredictable weather is the norm!
Comfort is Key! (Especially for kiddos!)
If your kid hates their outfit, they will 100% let us know about it. So, pick something comfortable and movement friendly. Can they run, play, and be their adorably chaotic selves in it? Perfect! The same goes for you. You want to feel good! If you’re constantly adjusting your top- it’s not the right choice.
The Little Details Make a Big Difference
Wrinkle Patrol: A quick steam or iron goes a long way.
Shoes matter: Sneakers might be comfy, but do they fit the vibe?
Accessories- minimal and timeless is best (unless we’re talking about a tiny baby in suspenders— then, by all means, go all in!)
Final Thoughts ( & a Shameless Plug)
At the end of the day, this is YOUR photoshoot. The most important thing here is that you feel good in what you wear. Confidence looks better than ANY trendy outfit, I promise.
And if you’ve made it this far and are still staring at your closet— don’t stress — I’m here to help! When you book a session with me, I’ll give you personalized outfit guidance so you can show up feeling your best.

It all begins with an idea.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
